The fantasy action RPG Genshin Impact came out in 2020, and its massive open-world, exciting combat system, anime style immediately attracted millions of players. Genshin impact was such an instant hit, in fact, that its develops (miHoYo) raked in the highest-ever first-year launch revenue, to the tune of more than $3 billion.

Switching seamlessly from one character to the next allows players to enjoy a variety of play and combat styles. Once you get bored of Genshin Impact, though, there are plenty of shiny new (and older) games that have a similar appeal.

    1. The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Genshin Impact players who really want a game just like it shouldn’t look further than The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild. If you’re a seasoned Genshin Impact player, it won’t take you long to get the hang of this installment of The Legend of Zelda, and it won’t take much to get you to love the graphics, either.

You’ll be taking the role of Link, an amnesiac who’s just woken up after a century of sleeping. You know you need to recover your lost memories… but you’ll have to discover everything else about this game on your own.

Players can run, swim, climb, and even use paragliders on their journey through the game’s massive world. Keep moving, because you’ll need food and resources to upgrade or replace your weapons (which break over time).

As you go on NPC quests, make sure to activate shrines and towers to enable fast travel options that make it much easier to move through this world.

    2. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

    The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
    The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

First released back in 2011, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim remains popular. A gorgeous open-world action RPG, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is set in Skyrim. The player character — the Dragonborn — takes on the challenge of defeating Alduin the World-Eater and saving the world.

You decide how to play the game, and that starts with highly customizable character options. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim allows you to switch between first- and third-person perspectives effortlessly. As you roam the vast world, you’ll have the chance to take on as many side quests as you like and even trying your hand at farming. The army of NPCs you’ll encounter along your way keeps things interesting, and they’re written superbly.

You’ll have to keep an eye on your health, stamina, and magicka (which allows you to cast spells) as you level up 18 different skills to eventually beat the game.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is a singleplayer game that never gets old, and Genshin Impact facts will discover new and exciting mechanics in a new world — while still recognizing plenty of the things they loved from Genshin Impact.

    • Publisher: Bethesda Softworks

    3. Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom

Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom
Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom

Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom is an action RPG with a linear gameplay style that calls on players to progress through quests. When you’re not working on getting closer to your objective of building a thriving new kingdom, however, you’ll be able to explore the vast open-world environment to your heart’s content. Uncover the treasures hidden throughout the map — in dungeons, villages, and punishingly dangerous environments.

Players enter this world as Evan Pettiwhisker Tildrum, a king banished from his castle, and find a massive fantasy world populated by mysterious races. As they try to rebuild their lost kingdom, they’ll encounter other realms — including one focused on gambling — and battle enemies with an interesting combat system that allows them to summon one ally from a party of three.

You’ll have to use melee attacks, magical attacks, and rely on your “Higgledies”, magical creatures, to make it to the end of the game. As you progress, you’ll be able to access higher-level gear by managing your kingdom well and creating thriving shops.

    4. Tales of Berseria

    Tales of Berseria
    Tales of Berseria

Genshin Impact players who simply aren’t ready to leave the anime genre behind should definitely check out Tales of Berseria. This Japanese action RPG was first released in 2016, as the 16th title in the Tales franchise, and will give you just the vibe you’re looking for.

Players are dropped into the Holy Midgand Empire, an archipelago world, where they take on the role of Velvet Crowe, a victim-turned-hero. Following her release from prison, she sets out on a quest of defeating the powerful Artorius and evil creatures called Malakhim.

Battles are fought by assigning characters from a party of four, with players able to switch between them at will. It’s essential to keep a close eye on your Soul Gauge, as allowing it to deplete makes you vulnerable in battle.

Tales of Berseria is mostly a single-player game — and it offers a world that’s easy to get lost in. Players who really want to face the adventure with their friends can take advantage of the local multiplayer option, though!

    5. Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age is a whimsical Japanese action RPG with a mean combat system. It won’t take much for Genshin Impact players to fall in love.

You’ll spawn into the world of Erdrea, as a character raised in a sleepy town — but that’s not where your story ends, or where it begins. As the player character discovers that he’s the Luminary, a hero on a mission to save the world, you’ll be battling one enemy after the other.

Players who’ve explored earlier Dragon Quest titles might find it interesting that Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age allows players to switch between modern third-person gameplay and the vintage 2D, top-down graphics of the older titles.

If you haven’t played Dragon Quest before, the game’s mechanics are intuitive to master — but challenging enough that you’ll want to keep developing your skills. You’ll have to manage your squad well to defeat the trickiest opponents, and when things get really tough, you can “pep” your squad members up.

Players who enjoy taking the scenic route can opt into the numerous exciting NPC quests the game has to offer, while skill building also plays a key role in the game. Unlock the hidden skills if you can find them!

Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends & the Secret Fairy
Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends & the Secret Fairy

Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends & the Secret Fairy is another Japanese action RPG that Genshin Impact players can slide right into. The 22nd title in the Atelier series, this game was released in 2020 and continues to follow alchemist and teacher Ryza. After agreeing to join her friend Tao on a quest to investigate a mysterious stone, the game begins — the stone is revealed to be an egg, and the adventure only grows from there.

This fantasy adventure-action RPG offers a wide world to explore, and the graphics are bound to get Genshin Impact fans hooked in no time. The combat system, which features interactive real-time tactics, is a lot harder to master — but that only means that you’ll have endless hours of fun uncovering everything that’s possible in Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends & the Secret Fairy.

    7. Immortals Fenyx Rising

    Immortals: Fenyx Rising
    Immortals: Fenyx Rising

Genshin Impact players who are ready for a brand new challenge might enjoy Immortals Fenyx Rising, an action RPG played from a third-person perspective. Start the game off by creating your own character, and then dive into the role of Fenyx.

Your main mission? Saving your brother from the powerful villain Typhon, who has escaped the underworld. As you endeavor to beat the game, you’ll travel through the seven regions of this massive open world, which is packed with references to Greek mythology.

Ride on horseback or take your chances with Daedalus’ wings — or scale the steepest of cliffs, if you have to. Fight your enemies with swords, axes, and ranged weapons, but make sure to keep an eye on your stamina. You can’t fight when you’re exhausted, after all!

    8. Octopath Traveler

    Octopath Traveler
    Octopath Traveler

Octopath Traveler is a unique HD-2D adventure role-playing game set in Orsterra, a world said to have been created by 13 gods. One of them was banished to the afterworld. Players follow the stories of eight different heroes, all of which are playable characters.

Pick carefully, because once you do, you’ll have to stick with the character until you’re victorious in completing their main quest! Each playable character has a unique skill set as well as a unique reputation with the world’s NPCs. NPCs are divided into multiple classes, and you’ll have to be careful to stay on their good side, or they won’t interact with you any more.

Octopath Traveler features turn-based tactical combat that allows you to choose between conventional and elemental attacks. Choose your tactics wisely to deplete the enemy’s shield and win the battle!

    9. Albion Online

    Albion Online
    Albion Online

MacOS and Linux gamers looking for games like Genshin Impact might be bitterly disappointed by the fact that none of the games covered on this list so far are available for your platform. Albion Online, a very new game, is for you!

Albion Online is a medieval fantasy role-playing game — a MMORPG — that’s amazingly open-ended. You’ll choose what equipment to wear to determine what your character can do, and how they can fight, when you start the classless game.

You’ll then venture into the world to do quests and upgrade your equipment to unlock brand new abilities as you gain “fame” (experience). Players are free to explore the entire world, but beware — if you venture into high-risk zones without preparing yourself, you’re sure to lose your hard-won gear in battle.

Albion Online has a thriving player-led economy through which you’ll be able to find nearly everything you need, if you have the cash.

    10. Final Fantasy XIV

    Final Fantasy XIV
    Final Fantasy XIV

Genshin Impact fans who are looking for a multiplayer game they’ll feel at home in should check the now already classic Final Fantasy XIV out. This famous MMORPG invites new players to customize their characters, beginning with choosing between being a disciple of war or magic, depending on your preferred play style.

You then start exploring the world the game has to offer, encountering other players and interesting locations along the way. Try your best to gain experience to upgrade your gear and abilities during the early game, including by doing NPC quests.

Once you’re ready for a bigger challenge, start fighting bosses and other players with magical and physical attacks.

Need something specific? Final Fantasy XIV has an active player economy, and your class determines what you can contribute.

    11. Assassins Creed Odyssey

    Assassin's Creed: Odyssey
    Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey

Assassins Creed Odyssey might have a radically different style compared to Genshin Impact, but players who love the open-world aspect of the game will easily be able to get excited about this 2018 action RPG.

You can choose to play as Alexios or Cassandra in this campaign-based RPG. Either way, you’ll spawn into a vast world packed with NPCs that’ll invite you to complete side missions as you explore. Raid the treasure hidden throughout the map as you find it and get ready for battle!

Assassins Creed Odyssey offers two different combat modes — weak but fast, and strong but slow — and the game also has an exciting stealth mode. You can also gain allies over time.

The best thing? Everything you do in Assassins Creed Odyssey affects the outcome of the game. That means the fresh run you start after completing the main campaign can lead to a different ending, keeping the game exciting.

This anime-style RPG allows players to embody the role of eight different protagonists, each of which carries a great burden and is tainted by crime.

As well as completing the main mission, you’ll be able to enjoy lots of side quests. Tales of Crestoria uses a turn-based combat system and has 15 exciting different weapons classes.

Along the way, they’ll have to look for Eternal Aspects to boost their stats, competing with evil creatures who are also after these magical amulets.

This game features a grid-based battle system and four tiers of weapons. Dark Deity is makes for a nice change of pace if you’ve been playing Genshin Impact for ages, but you’ll still find familiar elements.

    Soul Hackers 2

Soul Hackers 2 is the brand new sequel to Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers, which came out in 1997. This Japanese RPG has already received overwhelmingly positive feedback for its combat system and style, and is bound to appeal to Genshin Impact players.

The game is set in a near future where demons hide among humans. The demon world is deeply divided in their views on the human race, but some humans — Devil Summoners — form pacts with them. Add a powerful AI to the mix, and you have a winner on your hands.

Battles are fought in parties of four, and Soul Hackers 2 has a turn-based system. Should you find yourself on the losing end of a demon attack, you could always try to negotiate, instead.

    Honkai Impact 3rd
    Honkai Impact 3rd

Another miHoYo game and another Impact game, Honkai Impact 3rd is another obvious candidate if you’re looking for a game just like Genshin Impact. Honkai Impact 3rd calls on players to fight a  wide range of enemies using their team of Valkyries. Each Valkyrie has its own pros and cons, so you’ll have to choose wisely — though you can upgrade them over time as you gain XP and collect resources.

Honkai Impact 3rd really stands out for the fact that this game offers several multiplayer modes. Want to work to defeat enemies with your friends? Go for coop mode. Want to see how you stack up against your buddies? Competitive mode is for you.

Singleplayer games have exciting gameplay aspects to explore, too, though, including a unique Story mode that gives you an entirely new look at all the Valkyries. If exploration is your jam, try Honkai Impact 3rd’s open-world mode for hours of fun.

If that wasn’t enough, Honkai Impact 3rd incorporates cool minigames that’ll keep you entertained if you’ve only got a little time.

Games Like Genshin Impact: The Verdict

Genshin Impact players who are ready for a new challenge might enjoy any of the games on this list — but if you’re not sure where to start, we’ll point you in the right direction.

Try The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild if you’re looking for a supremely well-designed and beautiful game that’s really just like Genshin Impact. If you’d like to stick around the same general universe, and you crave similar mechanics, go for Honkai Impact 3rd.

Players who don’t mind venturing out a little might enjoy the 2022 game Soul Hackers 2, and gamers who place a premium on gorgeous fantasy graphics will love Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age.
