The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an action RPG that was developed and published by CD Projekt. Released back in 2015, the game achieved critical success and is now regarded as one of the best RPGs out there.
Offering a vast open world to explore filled with interesting characters, unique characters, dialogue trees, and a plethora of monsters to eliminate, the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has everything that one would expect to find in a good RPG.

1. Horizon Forbidden West
Horizon Forbidden West is an action role-playing game that was developed by Guerrilla Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Released on February 18, 2022, the game serves as a second installment in the Horizon franchise and is a direct sequel to the previous game in the series, Horizon Zero Dawn.
The story of the game picks up right where the previous game left off, and once again puts the player in the shoes of Aloy, a hunter of the Nora tribe who is tasked with discovering the source of a strange plague within the Forbidden West.
Just like The Witcher 3, Horizon Forbidden West provides the player with a huge open world to explore, a plethora of strange beasts to slay, a whole bunch of side quests to complete, and even though the combat system of the two games is quite different, Horizon Forbidden West is still worthy of being on this list.

2. Elden Ring
Elden Ring is an action RPG developed by FromSoftware and published by Namco Entertainment and is one of the newer games on this list with its release date dating back to February 2022. The game was directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki who collaborated with the famous fantasy writer George R. R. Martin and is the studio’s latest Souls game.
Set in Lands Between, a vast realm ruled by Queen Marika, the player assumes control of a customizable character who is one of the Tarnished, a group of individuals who have been banished from the realm by Queen Marika. Your main goal is to become the Elden Lord and defeat anyone who dares to stand in your way.
Elden Ring features a huge open world that players can explore as they see fit. It is filled to the brim with dungeons to loot, evil creatures to defeat, characters to meet, side quests to complete, and secrets to uncover.
When it comes to gameplay mechanics, the Elden Ring features a ton of customization options, a wide variety of spells and abilities, a plethora of different weapons, and numerous attributes which you can upgrade to customize and adjust your playing style.

3. God of War
God of War is an action-adventure video game that was released back in April 2018 for PlayStation 4 and later in January 2022 for PC. Developed by Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, the game marks the eighth installment in the popular God of War franchise and is a direct sequel to God of War 3 which was released back in 2010.
The game is set in ancient Scandinavia in the realm of Midgard and once again puts the player in control of Kratos, a former Greek God who is tasked with spreading his wife’s ashes at the highest peak of the nine realms.
God of War features a much more linear story and its world isn’t considered to be fully open, nevertheless, its world is exciting, mysterious, and explorable which when combined with the game’s combat system and other RPG elements makes it an excellent game comparable to Witcher 3.

4. Kingdom Come: Deliverance
Kingdom Come: Deliverance is an action RPG that was developed by Warhorse Studios and co-published by Warhorse Studios and Deep Silver. The game was released back in February 2018 and received generally favorable reviews from both critics and players alike. The game is available on multiple platforms and a version for Nintendo Switch is scheduled to release sometime in the future.
The game is set in Bohemia during an ongoing war in the year 1403 when Wenceslas IV becomes the new King of Bohemia. Unfortunately, his rule is cut short as his half-brother Sigismund imprisons him and invades the country with his army.
The player assumes the role of Henry, a son of a local blacksmith whose village gets burned to the ground by Sigismund’s soldiers. You manage to survive the raid and end up in the service of Lord Radzig Kobyla, who is organizing a resistance against the Sigismund.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance shares a similar aesthetic with the Witcher 3, though a lot realistic without the monsters and magic and other fantasy elements. The combat is also quite a bit different, however, the game features a lot of RPG elements such as skills, perks, a plethora of weapons to use as well as an exciting world filled with interesting characters to explore.

5. The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim
It comes as no surprise to anyone that The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim makes an appearance on this list, after all, it is one of the most played RPGs out there. Skyrim was developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. The game was released back in 2011 and since then has received three DLC packs dubbed Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn.
The game is set in Skyrim, the northern province of Tamriel, and takes place 200 years after the events of the previous game, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. The player takes control of a customizable character who turns out to be a Dragonborn, a person who has the soul of a dragon and is tasked with defeating the ancient dragon ALduin who is trying to destroy the world.
Although the setting is different, just like the Witcher 3, Skyrim offers a huge open world to explore, various monsters and bandits to defeat, lots of dialogue with unique characters, and various RPG mechanics including skill trees, attributes, and much more.

6. Fable Anniversary
Fable Anniversary is an open-world adventure RPG developed by Lionhead Studios and published by Xbox Game Studios. The game was released back in February 2014 and is a remasted version of the first Fable game which was released in 2004. Fable Anniversary comes with all the content from The Lost Chapters included.
Fable Anniversary takes place in Albion, a fictional state made up of numerous autonomous city-states, and puts the player in the shoes of a young boy whose village gets attacked by bandits. While the boy manages to hide, his sister isn’t so lucky as she gets kidnapped after their parents are brutally killed. It is up to the player then to become a hero or maybe a villain. The choice is yours.
While Fable Anniversary provides a solid mix of standard RPG elements, it puts a lot of emphasis on character interaction, dialogue, and choices. Everything that you do or say will affect the game in one way or another, which plays well into the game’s morality system.

7. Monster Hunter: World
Monster Hunter: World is an action RPG that was developed and published by Capcom. The game was released back in January 2018 and marks the fifth main installment of the Monster Hunter franchise. Monster Hunter: World was originally released for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 with the PC version launching at a later date in August 2018.
The player takes control of a player-created character who is tasked with traveling to the New Word, an unpopulated land where various monsters roam freely. The player joins the Research Commission to study the New World and goes on to complete various missions and quests.
It is worth noting that while Monster Hunter: World isn’t an open-world game like the Witcher 3, it does share some similarities with it as it allows the player to obtain and improve their gear and of course, go up against a plethora of giant monsters and vicious creatures.

8. Middle Earth: Shadow of War
Middle Earth: Shadow of War is an action RPG that was developed by Monolith Productions and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. The game was released back in October 2017 and is a direct sequel to Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor which was released back in 2014.
Middle Earth: Shadow of War takes place in J. R. R. Tolkien’s universe and is set between the events of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings trilogies. The player once again assumes the role of ranger Talion whose body is shared with the spirit of the elf lord Celebrimbor, as they embark on their quest to forge a new ring of power and gather an army to battle Sauron.
Middle Earth: Shadow of War obviously has a different setting compared to Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, however, just like Geralt, you can go up against numerous enemies and slice through them like butter. If you enjoy battling against armies of Orcs and Uruk-hai and eliminating them in style, then you should give Middle Earth: Shadow of War a go.

9. Greedfall
GreedFall is an action role-playing game that was released back in September 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Developed by Spiders and published by Focus Home Interactive, Greedfall received a PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S release in June 2021 and has a sequel that is currently being developed.
The game puts the player in the shoes of De Sardet, a noble of the Merchant Congregation who comes to a mysterious island that ends up being the focal point over which many fictional nations quarrel in an effort to colonize it. It is then up to the player to decide whether to team up with any of the attacking nations or help out the local natives who are trying to defend their homeland.
Admittedly, Greedfall’s combat and graphics feel somewhat outdated when compared to Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt, however, the different playable classes, the unique companions, and the mysterious world are what make GreeFall worthy of being on this list.

10. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a game that really needs no introduction when we are talking about action RPGs. This actin-adventure title was developed and published by Nintendo and is the latest main entry in the popular Legend of Zelda franchise.
Released back in 2017 for Nintendo Switch, the game has become an example of what a good open-world action-adventure game should look and feel like. An upcoming sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is currently in development and is scheduled to be released sometime in 2023.
Once again, the player takes control of Link, who has awakened after a hundred-year slumber and is trying to regain his memories while at the same time trying to prevent Hyrule from being destroyed by Calamity Ganon.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild shares many similarities with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt with the most notable ones being an immersive open world that you can explore however you see fit as well as a plethora of characters to meet, quests to complete, and enemies to kill.

11. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is an open-world action-adventure developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. Released back in November 2020, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is one of the newer releases on our list and marks the latest entry in the popular Assassin’s Creed franchise.
The game is set during the Viking expansions into the British Isles, sometime between 872 and 878 AD. The player assumes the role of the video game’s protagonist Elvor Varinsdottir, a Viking raider who is trying to create his own Viking clan, but quickly gets caught in the ever-lasting struggle between the Assassin Brotherhood and the Templar Order.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla shares a lot of similarities with the Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt, most notable being a huge open world to explore, a plethora of sidequests and tasks to complete, and many secrets to discover. The game also features an engaging combat system and an interesting dice mini-game called Orlog.

12. Nioh
Nioh is an action RPG that was developed by Japanese developer Team Ninja and published by Koei Tecmo in Japan, and Sony Interactive Entertainment globally. The game originally came out back in February 2017 and since then has received multiple DLC packs a sequel in 2020, and a remastered release for PlayStation 5 in 2021.
The events of Nioh take place in a fictional version of the year 1600, with the player assuming the role of an Irish sailor named William Adams. The protagonist then goes off to fight various types of warriors and supernatural entities known as Yokai in an effort to unify Japan.
Nioh comes with an engaging and challenging combat system that features a wide variety of weapons, light, and heavy attacks, a plethora of unique moves, and of course, the game’s most prominent combat feature, the three different combat stances to switch between.

13. Red Dead Redemption 2
Red Dead Redemption 2 is an action-adventure title that was developed and published by Rockstar Games and released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in October 2018. The game is a prequel to the first installment of Red Dead Redemption and has received a PC and Stadia release in November 2019.
The events of Red Dead Redemption 2 take place in 1899 across five US states with the player assuming the role of its protagonist, an outlaw named Arthur Morgan, who is forced to fight for his survival while constantly being chased by federal agents after one of his heists goes south.
While Red Dead Redemption 2 differs a lot in almost every aspect when compared to the Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt, it does feature an interesting setting, a great story, and a terrific open world to explore which lands it on this list.

14. Cyberpunk 2077
This list wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t mention Cyberpunk 2077 from CD Projekt Red. Developed and published by the same company that did The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Cyberpunk 2077 was released back in December 2020 for multiple platforms, and since its release, the game received multiple DLC packs and has an expansion pack dubbed Phantom Liberty scheduled to be released sometime in 2023.
Cyberpunk 2077 is set in the Free State of North California a metropolis called Night City which is made up of six different districts. Powerful corrupt corporations have more or less taken control of the city and crime and gang wars run rampant all over.
The player assumes the role of a customizable character named V who through a series of unexpected events ends up sharing his body with a long-dead celebrity Johny Silverhand. It is up to the player to find a way to preserve his own consciousness and try and make a name for themselves in Night City.
While Cyberpunk 2077 is obviously set in a different setting, both games share a lot in terms of gameplay mechanics and RPG elements. Night City is vat and brimming with side quests and things to do. There are many places to explore, factions to meet, and important people to talk to.
This combined with skills, cybernetic implants, a wide variety of guns and weapons, and branching dialogue trees make Cyberpunk 2077 a perfect game to play if you have already completed The Witcher series and are looking for something similar.

15. The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings
The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is an action RPG developed and published by CD Projekt Red, and a second installment in the Witcher series of games. The game is a direct sequel to 2007’s The Witcher and was released in May 2011 on multiple platforms.
The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is a lot more linear compared to Witcher 3 and doesn’t feature an open-world which is why its side quests don’t take you too far out of your way. Still, the game features our favorite gray-haired protagonist, lots of interesting dialogue, skill trees, and of course, unique monsters to go up against.
