Pokemon come in all shapes and sizes and each of them comes with its own strengths and weaknesses as well as a unique set of abilities that they can utilize in combat. Over the years, the number of Pokedex entries has expanded and if you are a serious trainer who wants to be the very best like no one ever was, then your Pokemon roster needs to be as best as it can be.
There are many powerful Pokemon out there that excel in battle, however, none stand out as the Fire types which are known as some of the strongest in the franchise. Nevertheless, even among them, there are some that are better than others so let’s take a look at some of the best Fire Pokemon out there.
1. Charizard
Starting things off, we have Charizard, who while may not be the strongest Fire type Pokemon out there, is definitely the most iconic. Charizard was introduced way back during the first generation of Pokemon games and ever since it has been at the top of every single popularity poll.
When it comes to stats, Charizard’s best one is his 109 Special Attack, followed by 100 Speed, with the rest of its stats being more or less evenly spread around. All of this makes Charizard an excellent attacker capable of dealing large amounts of damage.
Charizard also comes with a wide variety of moves such as Harsh Sunlight, Solar Power, and Sunny Day, which can make its Fire-type moves even more powerful, and if that wasn’t enough, this powerhouse of a Pokemon has not one, but two Mega Evolutions, them being Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y, as well as a Gigantamax form.
2. Magmortar
Magmortar is a pure Fire type Pokemon that made its debut appearance during the fourth generation of Pokemon games and is one of the more bizarre-looking Pokemon to appear on this list. However, its strange yet sinister appearance perfectly suits its powerful abilities and personality.
Magmortar is an evolved form of Magmar and its biggest asset when it comes to stats is its 125 Special Attack, followed by 95 Special Defense and 95 Attack. This makes Magmortar a great offensive Pokemon, however, its Defense of 67 and less-than-average HP are its biggest hindrance.
Nevertheless, Magmortar can be an excellent addition to any team, especially when he is going first and is able to use one of his many abilities such as Fire Blast, Flamethrower, and Lava Plume.
3. Moltres
Next up, we have Moltres, a Fire/Flying type Pokemon and one of the Kanto Legendary Birds next to Articuno and Zapdos. Moltres was first introduced in Generation one and is considered to be a deity of fire.
Similar to our previous two entries on the list, Moltres is a very good attacker that boasts 125 Special Attack and 100 Attack and a set of moves perfect for eliminating opponents quickly such as its ability Schorching Sands and Sky Attack.
Moltres dual fire and flying type make it resistant to fire, grass, ice, steel, and bug type moves, however, it also makes it weak against water electric and rock type moves. Fortunately, Moltres’ Roost ability allows it to heal itself and remove hazards from the field.
4. Entei
Entei is a Legendary Fire type Pokemon and is one of the Legendary Beasts alongside Raikou and Suicine which according to the legend have been resurrected by Ho-Oh after the Brass Tower burned down.
Entei first appeared with the second generation of Pokemon games and when it comes to stats, Entei comes with 580 base stats with its highest stats being Attack and HP at 115, followed by Speed at 100 which allows Entei to both deal and take damage.
Besides great stats, Entei comes with a wide variety of moves such as its signature ability Sacred Fire which has a 50% chance to burn the opponent, and its Pressure ability which makes Entei’s opponent lose Power Points when Entei is hit by an ability which would normally make a Pokemon faint. ‘
5. Rapidash
Rapidash is a pure Fire type Pokemon and one that was introduced to the franchise way back in the first generation. Bearing the appearance of a white magnificent unicorn with a mane made of pure fire, Rapidash is an evolved form of Ponyta and a favorite of many Pokemon fans out there.
When it comes to stats Rapidash comes with a base stats value of 500, the highest among them being Speed at 105 and Attack at 100. The rest of its stats are more or less equally distributed.
Despite being its best stat, when it comes to combat, Rapidash’s strength doesn’t come from its speed, but rather its solid Attack combined with its abilities such as Flash Fire which ensures that Rapidash stays a cut above other Fire type Pokemon.
6. Infernape
Coming up next we have Infernape, a Fire/Fighting type Pokemon, and a long-established fan favorite. Infernape is an evolved form of Monferno that was introduced with the fourth generation and is also one of the Starter Pokemon of the Sinnoh region.
When it comes to stats, Infernape comes with 534 total stats with Speed being its best stat at 108, followed by Attack and Special Attack, each of them at 104. All of this makes Infernape an excellent attacker who is capable of quickly dispatching squishy opponents, as well as some more durable enemies.
Infernape also comes with a wide variety of moves such as Nasty Plot which further increases its Speed, Flamethrower, and Focus Blast which has a 10% chance to lower enemies’ Defense.
7. Flareon
Flareon is a pure Fire type Pokemon that made its debut appearance in Generation One and is one of the final evolution forms of Eevee which occurs when Eevee is exposed to a Fire Stone.
Flareon is considered to be a very strong Pokemon with its base Attack stat being its best at 130, followed by Special Defense at 110 and Special Attack at 95. To counterbalance this, Flareon’s HP and Speed are extremely low at only 65 points, and its basic Defense is even lower at 60.
When it comes to abilities, Flareon’s most powerful move is Flamethrower which deals a high amount of damage and has a 10% chance to burn the opponent. Flash Fire is also a very useful move that helps compensate for Flareon’s low speed. Namely, if Flareon gets hit with a fire type move, it will become immune to fire type moves as well as increase its speed by one stage.
8. Arcanine
Arcanine is a Fire type Pokemon that was introduced in the first generation and its design was inspired by a Japanese garden decoration called the Shishi-odoshi. As a pure Fire type, this flaming canine comes with a weakness to water, ground, and rock type moves, however, it also comes with resistance to fire, grass, steel, and bug type moves.
When it comes to stats, Arcanine’s biggest advantages are its Attack at 110, Speed t 95, and HP at 90 points, and while this isn’t anything spectacular, Arcanine remains one of the most commonly used Fire types among players.
Overall, Arcanine is a solid choice that is easy to fit into any roster, however, this evolved form of Growlithe gets even better in Pokemon Legends: Arceus where it gets a new stronger form.
9. Reshiram
Reshiram is a Legendary Pokemon that was added to the Pokedex in Generation five and is a dual Fire/Dragon type. This Pokemon served as a mascot for Pokemon Black and is a member of the Tao trio along with Zekrom and Kyurem.
Reshiram comes with 680 base stat with its most impressive stat being its Special Attack with the value of 150 which makes it an extraordinary attacker capable of dealing high amounts of damage. This makes Reshiram an ideal Pokemon for removing tanky opponents off the field.
In terms of abilities, Reshiram has quite a varied set with Flare Blitz and Outrage being some of the most prominent ones which are great for quickly dispatching enemies. In addition to that, Reshiram also has a Dynamax form which makes it even more powerful and opens allows Reshiram to use a brand new set of abilities such as Max Flare.
10. Typhlosion
Typhlosion was introduced to the franchise during the second generation and is a pure Fire type. This Pokemon has the highest base stat when it comes to Johto Starter Pokemon and is an evolved form of Quilava and the final evolution of Cyndaquil.
Due to its type Typhlosion is weak to water, ground, and rock type attacks, however, it is also resistant to fire, grass, ice steel, and bug type attacks. Its best stat by far is its Special Attack of 109, followed by its Speed at 100.
Overall, Typhlosion is an excellent attacker with a variety of moves at its disposal with its best one being Eruption which is a fire type move that gets stronger as Typhlosion’s health gets lower.
With the release of Pokemon Legends: Arceus, Typhlosion has received its Hisuian form along with a few other Pokemon.
11. Magcargo
Magcargo is a Fire/Rock type Pokemon that bears the appearance of a lava slug with a stone shell on its back. Magcargo was added to the Pokedex in the second generation and is an evolved form of Slugma.
Despite its cute and innocent look, Magcargo is a fierce attacker who can quickly clear the field of enemies due to its high Special Attack which can increase the power of its other abilities such as Flamethrower and Earth Power. However, this is not all as its Flame Body also deals a good bit of damage and helps bring opponents’ HP down more quickly.
Another one of Magcargo’s moves worth mentioning is Overheat which deals a lot of damage to the opponent but in exchange, lowers MAgcargo’s Special Attack stat by two stages. It is best that you use this attack only when you are sure that you can take down an enemy Pokemon in a single hit.
12. Blacephalon
Next up we have Blacephalon, a Fire/Ghost type and a relatively new addition to the franchise introduced in Generation Seven. Blacephalon is definitely an interesting entry on our list as it is debatable whether calling it a Pokemon is correct as it is a creature from a different dimension called an Ultrabeast. Despite this, inhabitants of the Alola region have dubbed it a fireworks Pokemon due to its appearance.
When it comes to stats and abilities, Blacephalon is a true embodiment of what we would call a glass canon. It comes with extremely high Speed and Attack stats which allows it to eliminate other Pokemon with a single hit, however, it also comes with absolutely no survivability at all.
Blacephalon’s signature abilities involve it removing its head and throwing it at enemies. The head then explodes upon impact like a bomb, dealing extremely high damage in the process. It is also worth mentioning that Blacephalon doesn’t evolve.
13. Darmanitan
Darmanitan was first added to the Pokedex in Generation five and is a pure Fire type. However, later in generation eight, an Ice type variant of Darmanitan was introduced as specific to a certain region.
Darmanitan is a very unique Pokemon due to it being able to change its form and type depending on its ability and HP. The most prominent Darmanitan version is the Galar version due to its excellent offensive capabilities. In Galarian Zen mode, Darmanitan receives an increase in its Attack and Speed stats, making it a force to be reckoned with.
In this state, Darmanitan changes its type to Fire/Ice and is capable of using fire moves such as Flare Blitz as well as ice moves such as Icicle Crash. The only downside to this state is Darmanitan’s low defensive capabilities.
14. Houndoom
Houndoom is a Fire/Dark type Pokemon that made its debut appearance in the second generation when Dark type Pokemon were introduced to the franchise. Houndoom’s appearance and incredible power are known to strike fear into its opponents which is why Houndoom is a go-to Fire type for many trainers.
When it comes to stat distribution, Houndoom’s highest stat is its Special Attack at 110 followed by Speed at 95, both of which make Houndoom an excellent offensive choice. This is counterbalanced by its very low Defense which is only at 50 points.
Houndoom’s abilities perfectly complement its fighting style and consist of moves such as Nasty Plo,t which makes its Special Attack more powerful, Fire Blast and Dark Pulse as well as Sludge Bomb which will provide some cover for Houndoom, but will not be enough to make up for its weak defense.
Overall, Houndoom is an excellent attacker capable of hitting hard and fast, however, its weakness to fighting, rock ground, and water moves combined with its low Defense stat makes it a viable choice only in specific situations.
15. Blaziken
Blaziken is a Fire/Fighting type that was introduced in the third generation and is the final evolution of one of the starter Pokemon of the Hoenn region. Many consider this Pokemon to be one of the strongest FIre types out there and often compare it to Charizard, and while Blaziken loses the popularity contest between them, in terms of power, it is more than capable of standing toe to toe with the iconic Pokemon from the first generation.
Blaziken has a total of 352 base stats with its most powerful stat being its Attack at 120, followed by its Speed and HP at 80 points each. While its Attack is pretty good, its other stats paired up with its low Defense are nothing to brag about.
This is where its abilities come in and turn things around. Blaziken’s signature move allows it to raise its Speed stat at the end of each turn which can quickly get out of hand if Blaziken isn’t taken care of quickly. Its other abilities such as Sword Dance can further increase Blaziken’s damage while its ability Close Combat can be used to lower the enemy’s Defense. All of this makes Blaziken a very dangerous threat and one of the best Fire types on this list.
16. Incineroar
Incineroar is an evolved form of Torracat and one of the more recently added Pokemon on this list. This Fire/Dark Pokemon is a capable fighter and can hold its own, however, one couldn’t be blamed if they expected just a little bit more from the final evolution of Litten.
We already mentioned that Incineroar is an excellent fighter which can be attributed to its Attack stat of 115. Most of its other stats are equally distributed at around 90 points with the only exception being Incineroar’s Speed stat at measly 60 points.
Incineroar also brings a wide variety of moves to the table with some of the best being Fire Fang and Fire Blast.
17. Salazzle
Salazzle is another relatively new addition to the Pokedex and is the first FIre/Poison type Pokemon on our list. Introduced in Generation seven, Salazzle is an evolved form of Salandit, however, it is worth noting that only female Salandits are capable of evolving into Salazzle once they reach level 33. Although they are a bit difficult to obtain, those trainers who put in the effort to catch one are rewarded with what many consider to be one of the best Fire type Pokemon.
Salazzle’s strength comes from its high Speed and Special Attack stats while its other stats are not much to write home about. While Salazzle comes with quite a few resistances, it also comes with many weaknesses as well, which when combined with its stats makes Salazzle a true definition of a glass canon.
All in all, Salazzle is a vicious attacker who doesn’t have much going for it besides its attacking capabilities. Regardless, if used carefully and responsibly, Salazzle is an excellent addition to any Pokemon roster.
18. Talonflame
Talonflame is an evolved form of Fletchinder and the final evolution of Fletchling which was added to the Pokedex in Generation six. This Fire/Flying type Pokemon is was one of the stronger Fire types in Pokemon X and Y and players can come across it relatively early in the game.
Talonflame’s total base stats are 499 with its best stat being Speed at 126. Its other stats are more or less equally spread out with none of them standing out, however, what Talonflame lacks in stats, it makes up for it with its move set.
Talonflame’s high Speed will almost always ensure that it makes the first move, and if that is not enough, its Gale Wings ability which allows Flying type Pokemon to attack first will more than makeup for it.
Besides Gale Wings, Talonflame comes with many other powerful moves such as Brave Bird, Flare Blitz, and Roost which can be a very useful recovery tool.
With a strong move set like this, it is no wonder that many consider it to be among the best Fire types. It seems that players weren’t the only ones to think that Talonflame was somewhat overpowered as its powers were nerfed in Generation seven.
19. Volcarona
Inching slowly to the end of the list we have Volcarona, the only Fire/Bug type Pokemon to appear on the list. Volcarona was introduced to the franchise in Generation five and it evolves from Larvesta which occurs once it reaches level 59.
Volcarona bears an appearance similar to a moth and since Bug type Pokemon were never considered to be very powerful, Volcarona is commonly overlooked by players which is kind of sad since Volcarona is an exception to this belief and an excellent addition to any roster.
Volcarona’s Attack and Defense stats are very low so its strengths come from stats like Speed and Special Attack as well as its versatile move set. Besides abilities like Quiver Dance which makes it an excellent sweeper, Volcarona can also utilize Psychic-type abilities. Furthermore, its Flame Body ability can burn enemies who come in contact with it and is an excellent source of chip damage.
20. Heatran
To wrap things up at our final spot we have Heatran, a Fire/Steel type Pokemon that first appeared with the release of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl.
Contrary to the majority of entries on our list, Heatran’s stat distribution is well-balanced which makes him kind of a jack of all trades, capable of both dealing and taking damage as well as being faster than most average Pokemon.
Heatran’s signature move is Magma Storm which casts its enemies in a fiery prison and deals damage to them over the next four or five turns. This is an ideal time for your Heatran to use moves such as Toxic or Taunt and deal massive damage to your enemy.
Overall, Heatran is well-rounded Pokemon that can easily be swapped in and out of combat as needed, and a great addition to any roster.
