    1. Silent Hill 2

    Silent Hill 2
    Silent Hill 2

Starting things off we have Silent Hill 2, the second installment of the Silent Hill franchise and by many considered to be one of the best survival horror games ever created. Silent Hill 2 was developed by Team Silent and published by Konami. The game was originally released back in September 2001 for PlayStation 2 but was ported to Xbox and Microsoft Windows a year later. Later in October 2022, a remake of the game was announced to be in development.

The events of the game take place in the titular town of Silent Hill located in Maine and mostly focuses on exploring the town’s backstory and the mysteries that the town is hiding. The player assumes the role of James Sunderland who is tasked with exploring the town while encountering various monsters and meeting some of the town’s residents.

When it comes to similarities with The Quarry, both games share the horror setting and the aerie environment, and scary monestrous creatures. However, The Quarry puts a larger emphasis on the story and player choices compared to Silent Hill 2.

    2. Resident Evil: Village

    Resident Evil: Village
    Resident Evil: Village

Next up, we have Resident Evil: Village, a survival horror game that was released in May 2021 and a sequel to the 2017’s Resident Evil 7: Biohazard game. The game was developed and published by Capcom and is available across multiple platforms including PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.

The game takes place three years after the events of Resident Evil 7 and the player assumes control of  Ethan Winters who is tasked with finding and rescuing his daughter amidst the village overrun by mutant creatures, ghosts, and other paranormal phenomena.

Resident Evil: Village brings most of the franchise’s key gameplay elements such as the creepy atmosphere, players being able to explore and scavenge their surroundings for ammunition and supplies, and resource management. However, unlike the Quarry, Resident Evil: Village is a lot more heavily focused on action and combat sequences which has left the Resident Evil fandom somewhat divided.

    3. Resident Evil 4

    Resident Evil 4
    Resident Evil 4

While we are on the topic of Resident Evil games, we wouldn’t feel like this list is complete without mentioning Resident Evil 4. Released back in January 2005, Resident Evil 4 this survival horror game is by many considered to be the best entry in the franchise and one of the best games of its genre out there. Developed by Capcom Production Studio 4 and published by Capcom, the game was released on every major platform available, and due to its popularity, a remake of the game was released in March 2023.

Resident Evil 4 is set in a remote location in Spain with the player assuming the role of special agent Leon S. Kennedy. The U.S. president’s daughter Ashley Graham has been kidnapped by a cult and it is up to the player to find and rescue her before it is too late. While searching for Ashley, Leon discovers that humans in the region are infected by a mind-controlling parasite which only further raises the stakes of your mission.

Like the Quary and most other Resident Evil entries, Resident Evil 4 features a mysterious environment, full of dread and grotesque creatures, however, unlike the Quary, Resident Evil 4 comes with a heavier emphasis on combat and action and environment interaction instead of story choices.

    • Developer: Capcom Production Studio 4
    • Publisher: Capcom
    • Release Date: January 11, 2005
    • Platform: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, GameCube, PlayStation 2, Nintendo Wii, iOS, Zeebo, Xbox 360, Android, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Oculus Quest 2

    4. The Dark Pictures Anthology: House Of Ashes

The Dark Pictures Anthology: House Of Ashes
The Dark Pictures Anthology: House Of Ashes

The Dark Pictures Anthology: House Of Ashes is an interactive horror survival game that was released back in October 2021 across multiple platforms. Developed by Supermassive Games and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, The Dark Pictures Anthology: House Of Ashes is the third installment within The Dark Pictures Anthology series of games.

The game picks up right after the events of the previous entry and continues the story with the player being able to control five different protagonists. The events of The Dark Pictures Anthology: House Of Ashes take place in the year 2003 during the invasion of Iraq and all playable characters are serving within their countries’ armies.

Many of the gameplay elements are similar to The Quarry which is to be expected considering the fact that the same developer is behind both of these titles. Managing character relationships, quick time events and an interactive story that permanently changes based on what the player does are just to name a few.

    • Developer: Supermassive Games
    • Publisher: Bandai Namco Entertainment
    • Release Date: 22 October 2021
    • Platform: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S

    5. Vampyr

    Vampyr
    Vampyr

Vampyr is an action role-playing game that was originally released for PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One back in June 2018 and later ported to Nintendo Switch in October 2019. The game was developed by Dontnod Entertainment and published by Focus Home Interactive.

The events of Vampyr take place in 1918 London during the era of the Spanish flu and the player assumes the role of a doctor named Jonathan Reid. The doctor discovered that he has become a vampire and is struggling to find peace between his Hippocratic Oath and the fact that he is a bloodthirsty beast now.

Vampyr features various gameplay elements such as combat and boss battles, however, most of the combat in the game can be avoided if the player chooses to do so. The game also features a choice-based system that affects the outcome of specific situations which is one of the reasons why Vampyr has made it on this list.

    • Publisher: Focus Home Interactive
    • Release Date: 5 June 2018

    Until Dawn

Until Dawn is an interactive drama horror game that was developed by Supermassive Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. The game was released back in August 2015 for PlayStation 4 and to this day, remains playable only on that platform. Until Dawn also received a virtual reality spin-off game titled Until Dawn: Rush of Blood as well as a prequel titled The Inpatient which we will talk about later.

Until Dawn was developed by the same company as the Quarry and many consider the latter to be its spiritual successor. This essentially means that both games have a lot in common in terms of gameplay elements.

Players assume control of multiple characters, numerous cutscenes, and a high emphasis on environmental exploration as well as player choices that can affect the outcome of various things which leads to one of many different endings.

The story of the game takes place in a fictional town called Tassing during the 16th century and occurs over a period of 25 years. The player assumes the role of an artist named Andreas Maler and finds himself in the middle of multiple murder mysteries which he is tasked with solving.

Unlike most other entries on this list, Pentiment doesn’t feature an aerie setting or a creepy environment, nor any strange monsters or creatures. However, like the Quarry, the gameplay is focused on exploration, gathering clues, and multiple choices which will affect the outcome of your murder investigation.

    The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead: The Game is an episodic adventure game that was developed and published by Telltale Games. The game was released back in April 2012 across multiple platforms and features five episodes in total.

The events of the game take place in a fictional version of Georgia, not too long after the breakout of a zombie apocalypse. The player is put in the shoes of a university professor and a convicted criminal named Lee Everett and is tasked with helping a girl named Clementine locate her parents.

The Walking Dead: The Game shares many aspects with The Quary including the aerie setting and some survival mechanics. However, like The Quarry, The Walking Dead: The Game focuses a lot on the story and offers players an opportunity to interact with other characters and affect the outcome of certain situations which makes it an excellent alternative to play if you have already finished the Quarry.

    • Publisher: Telltale Games
    • Release Date: April 24, 2012
    • Platform: Android, iOS, Kindle Fire HDX, OS X, Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, Ouya, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Xbox 360, Xbox One

    9. The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan

The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan
The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan

The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan is the second game from The Dark Pictures Anthology series to appear on this list. Released in August 2019 and created and published by the same companies as our previous entry, The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan marks the first entry within the series.

Once again, the player controls a cast of five characters who embark on a diving trip in order to find the wreckage of an old World War 2 airplane in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean. Things quickly take a turn for the worse when their ship stumbles across a group of pirates who force them to search for Manchurian Gold.

Since this is a horror game, and a game within The Dark Pictures Anthology series, paranormal events in the form of a Ghost Ship and spectral creatures make an appearance and a multilinear narrative based on player choice is heavily emphasized.

    • Developer: Supermassive Games
    • Publisher: Bandai Namco Entertainment

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Game

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Game is an upcoming survival horror game that is currently being developed by Sumo Nottingham and will be published by Gun Interactive. The game is based on the popular The Texas Chain Saw Massacre franchise and is scheduled to be released on August 18 2023 across multiple platforms.

Unfortunately at the time of writing this, we don’t much about the setting or the gameplay of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. However, we do know that the game will feature multiple killers, five to be exact as well as multiple victims who will be tasked with searching for a missing person.

We can’t say just how much the game will be similar to the Quarry at this moment, however, based on the number of killers and victims, as well as the setting, we can make an educated guess that they will at least share some elements.

    • Developer: Sumo Nottingham
    • Publisher: Gun Interactive
    • Release Date: August 18, 2023
    • Platform: PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One

The events of the game take place in the Blackwood Sanitarium and the year is 1952. The player controls the protagonist of the game, a patient within the sanitarium name Jefferson Bragg who is suffering from amnesia caused by a mine collapse.

As a prequel to Until Dawn and one of the games that came prior to The Quarry, The Inpatient comes with everything that you would later make these games stand out from the rest. A creepy world, paranormal events, scary creatures, and of course a world determined by your actions. It’s all here.

    • Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
    • Release Date: 23 January 2018

    12. The Evil Within

    The Evil Within
    The Evil Within

The Evil Within is a survival horror game that was developed by Tango Gameworks and published by Bethesda Softworks. Released back in October 2014, the game received praise for its implementation of horror elements while receiving criticism for its story and technical presentation. Regardless, the game was successful enough to receive a sequel titled The Evil Within 2 which was released in 2017.

The player assumes control of the game’s protagonist called Sebastian Castellanos who ends up in a nightmarish world filled with traps and foul creatures who are out to get you.

The basic gameplay elements are what you would expect from a survival horror game including boss combat, scavenging for supplies and exploring the environment, and finding various collectibles. However, as you progress through the levels and the story, the world around you will change based on your actions and choices which is the main reason why The Evil Within makes it on the list.

    • Release Date: October 14, 2014
    • Platform: PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Xbox One

The main plot of the game revolves around the player discovering the identity of a murderer known as the Origami Killer who has committed multiple homicides and is known for drowning all of his victims in rainwater and leaving an origami figure at the scene of the crime.

When it comes to similarities with The Quarry, players can explore and interact with their environment and play as four different characters whose fate is determined through player actions and choices.

Evil Dead: The Game puts the player in the shoes of Ash Williams or another different survivor and tasks you with fighting against Kandarian Demon and his followers by using any means necessary.

Last but not least, we have Friday The 13th: The Game, a survival horror game developed by IllFonic and Black Tower Studios and published by Gun Media. Friday The 13th: The Game was released back in May 2017 and while it is primarily a multiplayer game, a single-player mode was added to the game at a later point in time.

The game is set in the 1980s and features a semi-open world consisting of various locations from and around Camp Crystal Lake. Up to eight players take part in each game, and one player controls Jason Voorhees while the others assume the role of counselors. Their main goal is to eliminate each other with a wide assortment of tools and abilities, although there is an alternative for the counselors to win by either surviving long enough or by escaping.

In terms of gameplay, Friday The 13th: The Game differs quite a lot from The Quarry. Nevertheless, both games feature similar survival mechanics and a chilling atmosphere.
